Stealing Our Souls

By mike flugennockSaturday - August 28th, 2021Categories: Health Care, Trumpism, coronavirus, media, right wingnuts

There’s a new strain of Covidiot virus going around among healthcare workers — proof that Stupid can strike any of us, though if you consider how long it takes to become a doctor vs. how long it takes to become a nurse, it all makes sense.

There have been a couple of outbreaks of the new Stupid Variant in the past week, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and in New York. A close read of the thread in which Max Blumenthal tweets the NYT article tells me, personally, that Blumenthal is about to dive down the anti-vax rabbit hole if he hasn’t already. He seems to imply at one point that PhD’s were among the most reluctant to take the vaccine, which proves nothing except that having a PhD doesn’t make you immune to the Stupid Variant — nor does not being a Trumpster.

But, back to the outbreaks of Covidiot Virus. You know how back in the 1970s and ’80s you’d read every so often about some National Geographic documentary crew going deep into the Amazon jungle or someplace and encountering some tribe that’s lived in isolation for a thousand years, and they see the cameras and video images of themselves for the first time and freak out because they think the cameras are stealing their souls? Well, how different is that from these doorknobs who think that Bill Gates is putting microchips in vaccines, or that taking cow dewormer and shitting out your stomach lining will cure Covid-19?

Important Fish to Fry

First of all, huge thanks to Kate Nocera at Buzzfeed News for tweeting that inspiring quote from the Speaker.

So, now, folks… considering her enabling of fascism, her support for an obscene war budget, her desperate opposition to Medicare For All, and her bitter refusal to hold a criminal Executive to account – a tendency going back to Bush v2.0 – I have to ask myself: who are the “important fish” that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are needing to fry?

Oh, yeah, that’s right…

Nah Nah, Hey Hey, Goodbye

By mike flugennockMonday - May 8th, 2017Categories: Health Care, Party Animals, Trumpism

Last week, after having their asses handed to them on the healthcare bill, Democrats in the House Of Representatives inexplicably, gleefully burst into a chorus of “nah nah, hey hey, goodbye” in response.

This was claimed to have been a sarcastic response to indicate that Conservatives would lose their seats in next year’s midterm elections because of their support of “Trumpcare”, but it was just another example of the Democratic Party’s arrogance, short-sightedness, selfishness, and utter political tone-deafness.

Who’s More Progressive?

By mike flugennockFriday - February 24th, 2012Categories: Afghanistan, Economy, Health Care, Obamarama, Party Animals, elections

This piece was inspired by a blog post by Owen Paine, one of my favorite contributors to one of my favorite Leftie blogs, Stop Me Before I Vote Again. He quotes some interesting passages from President Nixon’s 1971 State Of The Union Address in which he mentions the “expansionary” budget he was about to submit to Congress, a “full employment budget”. Here’s The Tricky One’s own words from back in ‘71:

“By spending as if we were at full employment, we will help to bring about full employment”

Now, mind you, I’ve never been a Nixon revisionist, and I wasn’t one of those bonehead Liberals who spent the entirety of the Dubya Administration wishing they had Nixon back, but, still… full-employment budget? Then, I started thinking back some more… EPA? Detente with the Soviets? Healthcare program compromise with Ted Kennedy? Christalmighty, I thought, was Nixon, on balance, more progressive than Barack Obama?

Yeah, sure, Nixon dragged out a pointless war that hardly anybody wanted, bombed civilians at the drop of a hat, surveilled and harassed dissident activists, and sponsored coups and assassinations all over the world, but hasn’t Obama also done these?

Jeeeeeezus… full-employment budget.
