Most Favored Nation

Most Favored Nation

It was the fifth anniversary of the atrocities of Tiananmen Square, still close enough to be fresh in many peoples’ minds. Bill Clinton had already famously, massively broken his campaign promise to not sign the North American Free Trade Agreement, and now it was time to snuggle up to the Chinese regime by awarding them “Most Favored Nation” trade status. This highly repulsive — but not unexpected — action was accompanied by the usual mealy-mouthing about how we can better encourage the Chinese regime to loosen up if they were trading partners, never mind that the place was being turned into one giant totalitarian sweatshop.

So… anyone see any change yet? Of course, given the USA’s own recent record in Somalia and Iraq, perhaps “Most Favored Nation” status is a form of honor among thieves…
